Clinical Assistant Professor
University of Illinois at Chicago
Kathryn Mae Sawyer, PharmD, MBA, BCACP, CAPM, is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. She completed a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. She went on to become a Clinical Pharmacist at Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC) in Nome, Alaska. Dr. Sawyer served the Norton Sound Region first as a clinical pharmacist and then Director of Pharmacy. During her tenure at NSHC, she served as the APPE Student Coordinator, Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist, Controlled Substance Stewardship Pharmacist and worked closely with provider staff to implement advanced pharmacist services. Implementing services in a remote Alaskan institution required searching for resources "outside of her pharmacy toolbox." The search for better management of time and resources lead Dr. Sawyer to the Project Management Institute (PMI). She received advanced PMI Training and went on to sit for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification. Dr. Sawyer went on to utilize PMI tools and techniques to implement multiple quality improvement projects using Advanced Practice Pharmacy Experience (APPE) student pharmacists. The use of student resources freed Dr. Sawyer to continue to provide high-quality pharmaceutical care while additionally implementing projects to improve care at the institution. Dr. Sawyer strongly believes that all pharmacists can use project management to get more done with less.
